What is Reiki?

Rei: spirit, soul, universal Ki: energy
Ki has a name in most languages:
Prana ~ Hindu        Chi ~ Chinese

Reiki is not: a religion, a belief system, psychic reading, hypnosis, meditation technique, or mind control.

Reiki is: Universal love in its purest form, completely unconditional. It heals the body and emotions, bringing them into balance and harmony, promoting health, happiness, prosperity, and long life.

History of Reiki

As I have been told, the history of Reiki has been passed from master to student for many years. My master told me:

Dr. Mikao Usui was the dean of a small Christian University in Kyoto, Japan. During a discussion about healing touch of Christ, he felt that many questions were not answered. Therefore he resigned from the university and started research about this phenomenon. First he traveled to the United States and studied in Chicago for a few years, but still the questions remained unanswered.

After traveling and researching in a Zen monastery, he learned how to read Sanskrit, which enabled him to read some ancient scriptures. Through deep meditation he was told he should go to a holy mountain, called Kuriyama. While on the mountain, he was to fast and meditate for twenty-one days. During this time he would revive enlightenment and spiritual clarity.

After 21 days of fasting and meditation he was sent a Ray of Light, which is known as a Reiki Ray of Healing. He heard a voice saying: These are the keys to healing, learn them, don't forget them, and do not allow them to be lost.

Shortly before Dr. Usui's death in 1926, he asked Fr. Chijiro Hayashi to ensure that the teachings be preserved. Dr Hayashi founded the first Reiki clinic in Tokyo in 1935. Hawaya Takata, a young Japanese American woman from Hawaii, went to Japan to be healed of cancer by the followers of the Buddhist monk named Dr. Usui. After her own healing, she begged the monks to teach her. She was finally allowed to study, and she was instructed in both first and second techniques. In 1938 Dr. Hayashi initiated her into Mastership. Madam Takata returned to the United States and began teaching Reiki. Reiki energy continues to grow today, across the world through many different teachers known as Reiki Masters.

Reiki for Relaxation and Balance

Our Reiki individual and group sessions are designed as a self-healing, inner voyage of self-discovery.  The Reiki Principles are used as affirmations to bring about positive changes in attitude.  Through the use of energy transference, creative visualization, and the Universal Life Energy of Reiki, positive results can be achieved.  These sessions are for personal growth as well as to become aware of your full potential.  By understanding the concept of giving as well as receiving this energy, the participant will feel connected with a universal energy and in balance spiritually, mentally, and physically. You will learn the concept of Reiki Healing through "Quiet Breathing", "Reiki Meditation",  "Setting Intentions", "Chakra Balancing", "Intuitive Awareness", "Distance Healing" and "Self-Awareness". Group and individual sessions are available at your location or at one of our Reiki Circle or Reiki studio locations. Horizon Productions sponsors monthly Reiki Healing and Meditation Group Circles throughout the South Bay. Check our

The Five Principles of Reiki

Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.  I will live the "Attitude of Gratitude.”  If we live with an attitude of gratefulness, the frustration of striving disappears, and we begin to recognize and allow the bounty of positive energy that is all around us, and that we may well have overlooked, to flow into our lives.  If we are constantly focusing on what we lack, we often paralyze ourselves, and stop our progress.

Just for today, I will not worry.
Worry only occurs when we stop trusting the universe.  Everything that happens in our life has a divine purpose, and the divine wisdom is continuously operating in all things.  Worry also takes us out of the present, either to the past, or the future, and robs us of life in the present.  Of course meditating and daydreaming of happier, safer places is not the same as worrying about things in the past or in the future.  Taking a rewarding journey in you mind’s eye can help create a worry-free present.

Just for today, I will not be angry.  Anger occurs mostly when we feel out of control, or our personal desires or something that we want is not fulfilled.  When you experience anger, ask yourself, "What is it that I want?" and you will usually find an answer.  Anger denies our oneness with all things by placing our desire over what is in our lives.  When we get angry we are trying to take control.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
If we respect our connection with life energy, and our oneness, we don't feel a need to take from others what is not rightfully ours, or to be dishonest in order to make a living.  Living the truth means living a life of clarity and simplicity.  Say what you really mean, be honest about who you are, and how you feel.  We waste so much energy trying to conceal things, to wear masks.  We boast, put on displays, and strive to prove ourselves.  By living honestly, in our work and our expressions, we simplify life, and make it much easier.

Just for today, I will be kind and show respect to my neighbor and every living thing
.  When we honor the divine life force, we will naturally respect how it is expressed through each and every individual, as well as any other expression of life.  Part of this respect is honoring the process that they are undergoing and knowing that divinity is working through them as well.  If we judge or criticize, we are making a statement of disrespect for the divinity that is working through that person.  Respecting others also means respecting their freedom of choice, and only offering assistance to those who request it.

Think about these Principles of Reiki and how you can incorporate them into your daily life experiences.  By understanding and using these principles as affirmations, how can you change your attitude in a positive way and how can these principles help you cope in your present environment, or in future environments or situations?
